Motherhood is full of seasons that pass too quickly. Whether you are expecting a baby, celebrating a milestone, or simply wanting to freeze time with your family, you deserve to remember these memories. As a newborn photographer serving Chicago and the western suburbs, I love helping families preserve life’s sweetest chapters. Here’s what to know about the best time for newborn photos.
The best time to schedule a newborn session is within the first two weeks of life. There are several reasons most newborn photographers prefer this timeframe. Around three weeks old, babies often begin a growth spurt, their skin may start to change, and baby acne can appear. They also become more alert and may stay awake for longer periods. This can make it harder to capture the sleepy, curled-up newborn images families love. However, if your baby is already past that stage, don’t worry. Beautiful images are still possible with an experienced newborn photographer. We simply adjust expectations and focus on what your baby is comfortable doing, especially after one month of age.
What If I Don’t Feel Prepared? Not feeling prepared is absolutely normal. There is a big difference between feeling unprepared and feeling afraid, and both emotions are completely valid. If you are feeling unprepared, don’t worry. I have a clear system that walks you through everything so you know what to bring and what to expect. If any questions are still lingering, I am always happy to help. As a full-service Chicago photographer, I provide everything needed for your newborn session. The only items you need to bring are your baby’s essentials, such as milk, diapers, and wipes. Everything else is prepared for you.
If you are feeling afraid, that is a different concern that I often see with first-time parents. My number one priority is always your baby’s safety. I am trained in newborn safety and continuously watch for any signs of discomfort or distress. All props and outfits are carefully cleaned and disinfected for each session. If it helps you feel more comfortable, I am also happy to wear a mask during your session. Whatever brings you peace of mind matters most.

Pack enough milk and diapers to keep your baby comfortable for the entire session.
Bring a pacifier, even if you do not usually use one, as it can gently soothe your baby during posing.
Try to keep your baby awake for a short period before arriving so they are ready for a deep, sleepy rest.
Plan to give your baby a full feeding once you arrive, which helps the session flow smoothly and allows us to capture those peaceful newborn images with ease.
